SEM/SEO Glossary of terms
Some of the most often used terms and expressions used in SEM and SEO industry:
- Career portfolios - are used to plan, organize and document education, work samples and skills. People use career portfolios to apply to college or training programs, get a job, get a higher salary, show transferable skills, and to track personal development. Crucial for portfolio's in educational environments is a degree of reflection to take place on what's in the portfolio file.
- Freelancer or freelance worker - a person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer. The Internet has opened up many freelance opportunities, expanding markets and helping to build it into one of the largest economic segments for many economies. Development for freelancing has been especially high for software development, website design, information technology, and business documentation.
- Meta elements - HTML or XHTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a web page. Meta elements can be used to specify page description or keywords.
- Pay per click (PPC) - an advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content websites/blogs, where advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an ad to visit the advertiser's website.
- PR - PageRank™ - a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web (WWW), with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.
- SEM - Search Engine Marketing - a form of Internet Marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in the Search Engine result pages (SERPs).
- SEO - Search Engine Optimization - the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site.
- SEO Audit - an evaluation of a website for SEO purpose. The goal of an audit is to ascertain the usability and of the website, give detailed conclusions and informations about errors found on site and suggest potantial solutions to them.
- SWOT Analysis - a strategic planning tool used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture (eg. website cometitiveness for specific keywords). It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieving that objective.
